Importing new car to Canada
The US not only benefits from cheap liquor and cigarettes, they also have much better pricing on their automobiles.
I've found out that Porsche North America will warranty new automobiles purchased in the US and imported into Canada. For your own information I did a basic breakdown on how much a basic Porsche Cayman S would cost purchased in Canada vs. purchased in the US and imported into Canada.
I did include taxes, but no freight or pdi to make this more straight forward.
CDN MSRP
Vehicle - $83,900
GST - $5,873
PST - $6,712
Total - $96,485
USD MSRP - $58,900
Converted - $68,613 CDN
GST - $4,802.91
PST - $5,489.04
6.1% duty on total = $4,813.20
Total - $83,718.15
That's almost $13k savings on a car that has a full Porsche warranty in Canada. Yeah that's just a rough calculation, and you've got to drive it across the border or ship it, and it may affect resale or trade in a bit, but that is ridiculous.

yup.. that's why guys likes PLYRS 3 and others continue to buy cars from the U.S. as there is a huge savings factor.
I'm sure when he's off of vacation, he may see this thread and chime in with some other info as he's really the person with the most importation experience on this board.

Did you find a dealer that will sell you the car for immediate export?
I tried about 9 dealers across the boarder on a 911, and no one would sell me one.

Chicos,
Depending on the vehicle that you want to import, you can save a bundle of money. Some vehicles (like the Honda Odyssey or the Acura TL) are actually less expensive here in Canada.
Your calculations are off just a bit.
Your U.S. exchange rate works out to 16.5%. That's nice - but a bit too low.
Also, you have to add in the 6.1% duty before calculating the GST & PST.
Please note that PDI & freight costs are outrageous in Canada compared to what U.S. dealers charge or in some cases don't charge at all.

05 Canuck - I tried two separate currency calculators and they work out to about the same rate and they are suppose to be both up to date. I believe the 6.1 duty is also taxable by PST and GST, if it isn't it makes the purchase via the US all the more attractive.
Mindcore - I'm not in a rush to get into another car, so I haven't started looking at dealers yet. I'm thinking I want to get 1 or 2 more years from my car (and wait until they work their 1st model year bugs), but just did a quick calculation to see the advantage. Because the Porsche warranty is valid in Canada it interests me.
Wondering if the Pcar US Dealers aren't allowed to sell for export, this would put a wrench in my spokes unless I wanted to buy used and private.
