AH HA!

The mystery leak in the basement is SOLVED!

The kid just put a medallion over the water mark on the ceiling. When I was there, the medallion fell to the floor. The tape apparently got less sticky when its wet..Nimesh's solution - find waterproof tape.

speaking of bad taste in cars.....

so we had an inspection when we bought the house, and everything came up roses.

but there's something strange in the basement that i've personally never seen before (not that i'm an architect/engineer/designer).

we have this plastic/rubber tube that runs from one of the gutters under the basement floor and terminates out against a wall and is fastened against a big black water pipe....it then receives (male/female) another smaller OD tube that comes from our laundry room (which is connected to the drain on our laundry tub), this smaller OD tube is also fastened aginst the big black water pipe.

the inspector advised that this was for pressure backwash from the washer/laundry tub and is somewhat common depending on how far from the gutter the laundry room is located (ours is pretty far from the gutter).

anyone else heard of such a "contraption"?

Kneemish, that is tube is most likely an airvent so that the system can breathe. If it wasn't there, your drain would gurgle like crazy, and could potentially spill water upwards.

Can't say for sure unless I see it though

ok, so that's why the guy said it's for pressure backwash.

he never called it by name, just what it was for.
