I posted this on the HADA board on the 27th when the plane caught me. Seriously, this warning would have been invaluable to me had I known about it then.
I left my apartment in the 4Runner, but as soon as I got out from the garage I thought there's no way we're going to have another day like this, so I better take advantage of it.
I took my regular route to the 404 to Newmarket, trying to cruise around my usual 130-140. Just after Buttonville airport I saw a plane turn to follow the path of the highway. He seemed to be going close to the same speed as me.
[Maybe I can keep up with him]
I started to lose him a bit, but I figured he probably couldn't fly any slower. I got a little held up by traffic, and I was starting to get impatient.
[He's probably been watching me]
[Maybe I should wave]
[I'll just try and catch up a bit]
I sped up to 150-160 and started to make a little headway. Traffic was very light, so it wasn't too hard. I tried not to make such a big scene, so I exercised caution when passing cars. But he kept going faster!
[Bugger wants to race]
[I'll catch him, maybe he can't tell I'm still here... I'm still behind him]
[It's not a cop, they use helicopters]
I sped up even more. I threw all caution into the wind. I was doing 170-180 and passing cars like they were standing still. Just before Green Lane he turned around and I got a straight view at his cockpit. Grinning ear to ear I pointed at said "I gotcha, haha"!
I slowed down to regular speed and got off. As I was passing under the bridge I heard a siren.
[**** **** ****, that's not for me]
[Who the hell else could it be for?]
[Maybe I should hop back on the highway and run]
[Maybe he hasn't seen me yet]
[Who's fooling who, it's over]
[**** **** ****]
I pulled over and shut off the car.
[I'm going to be here for a looooong time]
[Mother****! I needed my license]
[At least I live near good public transit]
The cop asked for the usual paperwork and said he'd call his buddy in the plane and see what he wants to do. "I'll be back in a sec, okay?"
[He was your buddy?]
[Don't say that... but say something]
[I'm so ****ing stupid]
[Who is going to want to take over a lease on an S2000 after the summer?]
[I wonder how much I'll be able to recover]
[What's leasebusters charge?]
[I hope I'll be able to afford insurance]
[How long until they find out?]
[I'm sure the winter will be over before I have to go to court]
[I'm losing my license for the next summer?]
[**** **** **** ****]
"Ohhhh kay"
I spent the next five minutes beating on myself. That was absolutely the stupidest thing I've done in years. I kept banging my head on the steering wheel, huffing and puffing, and trying to get myself into the fetal position while figuring how I'd adjust to my new life without a license. I did what most people who are faced with their mortality and started bargaining with God.
[Oh God, please let him go lightly on me]
[I'll never do something that stupid again]
I heard his car door clunk. I looked at the paperwork in his hand.
[There's no ticket]
[My prayers have been answered]
[Oh shit, no they haven't]
[I'm going to get arrested]
[I don't wanna boyfriend]
"We're going to let you off with a warning..."
[Oh my God]
[I really don't believe it]
[I don't deserve this]
[I have no idea how this happened]
[I'm the luckiest mother****er EVER]
"... my partner was watching you following too closely to the car in front of you at least three times. We didn't get a speed reading on you, but by the way you were flying by other cars you must have been doing at least 110-120."
"Wha..."
"Sorry, what was that?
[What the ****?]
[What, I was doing so much more than that]
[Could he be serious?]
[Shit, what do I say?]
[Say something!]
[Oh shit, you screwed this one up]
[You nearly got away with it]
[What can I say about what he's doing?]
[He's awesome]
[I'll never bad mouth an OPP officer again]
"Th... th... th-th thank you".
And he went back in his car.
