Default Duty for used item from US

hey guys,

I'm considering getting a used hardtop from a guy in Detroit, and the guy won't ship and wants me to pick it up locally.
I don't want to put extra 800km on my s2k and planning on rent a car to pick it up (budget rental provides unlimited KMs)
If I bring it to Canada, will I have to pay duty on it?
If I do, on what base will it be taxed??

Thank you!

I think the typical 13% on the purchase price for tax, and 6% for duty if not made in US. Probably only the 13% of whatever price. Get the seller to write you a sale for the purchase price to prove just in case the border guys don't believe the price you tell them.

I don't think you can take rental cars over the border.. I would double check that first

Ask if the seller is willing to declare the item as "warranty replacement". If so, you shouldn't be charged with anything.

Good Luck!

You can take rental cars over the boarder, I do for work all the time.

Your best bet is drive your S over and say your going to a car show, get it. install it, and come home later that day.

Just FYI
I picked up some used parts from a Buffalo shipping address and showed the customs guard my receipt of $70 and he let me go without paying any additional taxes or duties.

You don't want to put 800km on your car?

Drive down with the S and get him to install it for you. Drive home. The extra money you spend on a rental can go towards getting you S detailed when you get back.
