nabeel knows, if you get scared at mosport, or it spooks you because you have a "moment" you might as well park it for the rest of the day...cuz all you'll be doing is tippy-toeing around the track from that point on.
I know that feeling. I parked it.

[QUOTE=ITR Racer,Feb 15 2006, 12:33 PM] So, i test drove a Cayman S from Pfaff last week and wow, i was quite impressed.

-Love the sound of the engine and also hearing it from behind by back.

-Love the handling, easily outhandles a S2k

-Love the smooth power delivery and had a high fun factor

-Love the looks of it.

If you can afford $105+k out the door then cool, you only live once. You'll be the first kid on the block with one.

I do think the pricing is crazy on Pcars, but the alternatives for the money are Corvettes (no thanks) and BMW's.

There are few Porsche's on the road in Canada, because over 3 years of ownership if you have cash and trade the car in you'll lose about $21,000 in opportunity costs with the money (6.1% interest over 3 years, assuming reasonable investments), about $42,000 on trade in if you get 60% of the value of the car taking taxes into consideration on trade. The cost of owning this car (assuming you have the cash) is about $20k after tax money for a cdn per year, that doesn't include maintenance, insurance and a quarter panel at the track.

You could take your S2000, drive it for 3 years and then set it on fire and it would be less than owning this car.

My figures are very rough, but:

For me 75k in a demo vehicle 1 year old US = $14,600 in opportunity costs, $52k value back after 3 years (same depreciation as the Cayman S who knows, but 60% value back on trade of full purchase price) and we're looking at $38,000 operating costs vs. $63,000. Difference of $26,000 after tax money.

Our 04 S2000's value $35k might work out to $7,000 in opportunity costs, maybe 12,000 in depreciation. Total cost of ownership $19,000 over the same 3 year period (probably less, but I used approx figures).

I'm far from smart, not an accountant, but I do run a business.

Rounding off:

04 S2K about $19k add extra 2k maintenance if no warranty $21k
05 Boxster S (US) about $38k
06 Cayman S (CDN) about $62k

assuming cash purchase, no insurance, etc. Now I didn't take into consideration taxes on investments and this is a 15 minute calculation and is wrought with some errors, maybe math, assumptions etc. IMHO it might be pretty close to the truth.

I'm not saying don't get a car, or do get a car, as the choice is your pocket book. Money is only good when you spend it, people forget that, but you should always do your own calculations and purchase with your mind as well as your heart.

Nimesh is probably going to correct me, and I will this forum's advice on cars in the future, as well as open it up to the forum. I might be the test rat on this forum for a US used Porsche (hopefully).
don't forget astons, jags, benzes and used ferrari's.....basically any luxury/sporty/GT RWD car is P's competition.

would i love to own a P...sure, why not?

then why is my next car gonna be an M3/M4?

one word: price.

(btw, your math is reasonable - though i question the COO on the S2000, and you should not include taxes outright...only step-ups in tax as price increases from the lowest model to the highest in your comparison)

The one that you're least afraid of crashing.
That's why I got a track car.

Apparently sales are SUPER slow on the Cayman, it is overpriced and even Porsche knows it.
I'd agree with the others.....the car just came out a month ago. Also not many people (okay Chicos) purchase a sport car in winter. I'd agree once spring hits in full force sales will go up. It's probably similar to ice cream sales. Not as many people will buy ice cream in winter!

I meant the Cayman S or Boxster S for Pcars, should have been more specific. I think those are more often cross shopped with Corvette, BMW M and maybe 911s.

Yes, the CS is just out and yes, its winter, but I too do not believe that you will see a parade of CSs on every corner.

Most of the people who want a Pcar, lets face it, want it for image. Those people will not want to be at a light in a CS when a 911 is around.

The others, the BS buyers, want a perfectly balanced, higher performace car that provides tons of fun with a good brand name behind it. I bet that those people will buy the BS instead for the convertible.

Few will buy the CS because it offers the performance advantage.

Not a great comparison, but how many NSX-Ts were sold compared to NSX coupes? I think fewer then 20 coupes were sold since 97 while 1000 of so Ts were sold. And the coupes wernt more money! Same buyer. I bet you see CS sales at about 10% of BS sales, or less.

Nice car, but front legroom lacking. With seat all the way back and stering wheel up to school bus position, my legs were still impossibly jammed against the steering wheel. And I'm only 6'1".

911 fit nicely.
