I've asked around and so far it seems that a number of people from Central Florida are down with leaving Wednesday evening. We would get north of Atlanta late that night and crash in a hotel. This way we would all be rested for the scenic route into the Dragon. We would hit all the fun and pretty roads during daylight hours and arrive mid afternoon for check in at Fontana Thursday.

Now I know some of you don't have the time or interest for this and that is fine. I am sure those of you trailing your cars up to the dragon will take a more direct and less spirited route. Last year we had alot of fun in the mountains getting to the Dragon. This itinerary would be for the spirited group.

We have so many people going this year, that to attempt to keep everyone organized with pee breaks and Atlanta traffic would be a logistical nightmare. I suggest we break into three groups:

1. The Spirited Group
2. The Thursday Early Morning Risers
3. The Direct Route.

The Spirited Group will be spending Wednesday night north of Atlanta in Millegeville.

Here's the ROUTE:

Travel north on I-75 through Florida all the way to Macon, GA. In Macon, get off the interstate and take Hwy 129 going north to Millegeville, spend the night there.

Me and my +1 are leaving early Wednesday from Leesburg (at the 75/ Turnpike junction), and staying in Dahlonega. Let me know when everyone will be passing by, and we'll tag along.

 

Hmm, I was kinda hoping we'd do it just like last year which was drive up all day Thursday and arrive at the dragon Thursday night....

 

Alex, I'm sure there will still be a big enough group who wants to do that as well.

 

Yes, there is another group that is heading up first thing thursday morning. I just didn't want to leave anyone out. Anyone is welcome to drive with us.

Keep in mind:

Thurs morning plan:

15 hours drive up, best part of the drive (north of Atlanta) is in the dark and you are exhausted.
Check into Fontana late Thursday night/ early Fri morning. (like 2:00 AM)
Drive hard all day Friday.
Drive hard all day Saturday
Drive 12 hours home hitting the fun roads during daylight.

Wednesday eve Plan:

Drive to Atlanta wed night. (8 hours)
Sleep. Wake up refreshed and enjoy the mountain roads to the dragon.
Check into Fontana Thursday afternoon, relax or drive the roads.

 

Call me stupid, for A LONG TIME i have heard about the dragon, PLEASE TELL ME, wtf is it!???!!!

 

Some of your hours don't match up...

Atlanta to Dragon = Approx 3 hours

So if it is a 15hour dirve to the dragon from your location -
It would be a 12 hour drive on the Wedndesday plan - not 8

Maybe I am just confused?

 

Either way, I'm going with the Spirited Group. If that group goes on Wed. this year instead of Thurs. then I guess I'll be going on Wed....

You may be right, i'm not sure. I live in New Smyrna Beach which is far north form you guys. I know this: it takes me 5+ hours to make it to Atlanta. It took us 12 hours to make it to the dragon last year. That includes stops, and scenic routes. So i was guessing an a lot of the math from so. FL.

However, IMO it's a better deal for you guys esp. because of the added hours, but i know that many of you won't be able to get time off. just wanted to extend an invite, that's all.
