For people with Tinted Tails
Doing 70 on Turnpike just now in cruise control I pass a FHP sitting on the side of the road. He proceeds to run me down and tail me from 836 to 88th. When he pulls me over he said that when I hit the brakes to slow for the Sun Pass lane that he could not see my tail lights due to the tint covering them.
I told him he was wrong and I would prove it to him. So I looked up Florida Statue 316.221(1). I read to him that all cars must emit a red light visible from 1k feet and that no covering may be applied that restricts the visibility from 1k feet. I asked if he wanted to walk by 1k feet and determine if that is the case or if he wants to stand in front of the judge and explain himself. I then asked how the unmarked fhp dodge chargers have BLACK tail lights. He pretty much told me I was a smart ass and that I was lucky to be getting off.
I explained to him that it is sad I know the law better than him and he is a LEO.
Goes to show how quick cops are to issue tickets and how lazy they are to learn the laws the are hired to enforce.

looked up the statute as well as some associated reading.. good and interesting read...
i had pretty much always thought that.. "busted" tail light meant anything other than functioning 100%...
quite a few 'outs'...
