What is the point of martial art disciplines that have you repeatedly throwing the same punch or kick over and over again?

Yep, you're right. I guess if I ever want to learn how to fight in a life or death situation, I better train for years and years and repeatedly throw the same punches or kicks over and over again. I guess that's why all these "criminals" that go out and hurt other people are so good at what they do. Same for those in jail that kill others or have killed others. They must have spent years and years practicing how to punch or kick someone.
All that matters is that you strike your target effectively. It doesn't matter how you look in the process. Who cares if I can perform a beautiful roundhouse kick. If I don't strike the right target area or have enough power behind it, it doesn't matter!!!! Will practice make it happen? No. It doesn't matter what part of your body you use to fight, just as long as you strike your target with quickness and power (not speed and strength). Who says that your "practiced" strikes will be the ones you even use in a real fight?
Your analogy is off-base in this instance. Sorry.
