What do the gear levels mean?

I am still fairly new to the board and am wondering what the gear status means under the user name on the messages (i.e., 1st gear, neutral, etc.). And what are the stars for?

They are meaningless unless they mean something to you

They are set by your post count. The higher the count, the more stars you get.
