They (he or his parents) would likely take you to court in any case under some tort law (assault, battery, false imprisonment, intentional infliction of emotional distress). It will cost you money even if you win the case.

I would leave it to the police, or call OJ (just tell him this dirt bag has some sports memorabilia stashed at his house)

Has anyone considered dropping this info on the IRS? It could be construed that this guy is making a career out of this, therefore the market value of the stolen items would be imputed income to him. I'm sure he responsibly listed everything he's stolen in previous years on his returns.
