Default tranny fluid change disaster!

so we were changing out the tranny fluid on my AP1 today, its a 2000 model that i just bought with only 23000 miles and the fluid has never been changed so i figured i should do that soon cause that fluid is 7 years old

so after we drain the tranny we go to put back on the bolt at the factory torque spec

but right when the wrench hit the factory spec the metal housing that holds the bolt broke off in two pieces!!!!

you would think the bolt would fail before the metal housing

what chance do you guys think i have gettin a goodwill from honda, because even if you over torque this bolt it shouldn't snap off the metal housing???

Sweet baby Jebus. I've never seen that before. Can you post a better pic?

Bolt is steel and housing is aluminum, so no, the bolt won't go first. But still surprising that the housing broke and didn't just strip the threading. Maybe you weren't just torquing in the right plane, but was also pushing or pulling on the wrench?

probably not good on a 7 year old vehicle, and you are not the original owner...

might want to start scouring pick-a-part yards or asking around for a used one on the boards...

sucks man, that is a freak result

that sucks.

yeah that was definitely a freak result, i can't figure it out. Even if the torque wrench was off, it wouldn't be off by that much. We were using it fine.

i looked it up, a brand new tranny case from Majestic Honda will cost about $200, but u still have to have a transmission shop install it. I dunno how much that would be.

I've bought used parts from HAP many times. http://www.haprecycling.com/
The installation is going to be the big cost though. I don't know if you have to pull the tranny, but if you have to you might want to also do any other mods to that area that you were considering all at once to make it more worth the effort.

Is it possible that piece was repaired/glued by the previous owner and you torquing the bolt down revealed it???
