I recently got a ticket in my truck while driving around in Monterey, CA. The cop pulled me over for my tail light (its an 88 toyota pickup and the driver's tail light is faded bad). So to be nice and safe I pull off the freeway on the the next exit while using my turn signal. Near the bottom of the exit the cop then turns on his siren. My first reaction was that the officer wants me to stop NOW.
So I proceed to stop quickly (maybe even did a California stop since I was a little freaked out that he turned on his sirens) at the red light I turn right and stop. No other cars were around and it was around 1130 PM. The officer was a jerk right away. He says he stopping me for the tail light and for running the red light. He also asked me if I weapons or drugs in the car. I have military stickers on the car and showed him my military ID to. No luv though.

I had my insurance paperwork but the dates on it were old. So the cop writes me up for the tail light, running a red light and not having proof of insurance.
I was thinking during the stop now I know why cops getting shot during routine traffic stops.. anyway I'm going to fight it by mail because I don't want to drive up there for the court date. Any pointers that you can give me would be appreciated.

I've already fixed the tail light and took pictures of before and after. I'll also send in my proof of insurace. I'm just worried about the red light violation. I think its total BS but I'm not sure if he was video taping or what. I was thinking about drawing a diagram of the exit and where he sounded his siren and where I turned right and stop. First time fine for running a red light is 391 dollars I think, so I don't want to lose.

It was a solid red light and not a red right arrow?

I got one of those in Brea the day after Christmas a few years ago. I turned right at a solid yellow and the cop said I ran the red. The guy was a total jerk. Wrote me down for the vehicle code that red not making a complete stop when faced with a solid red light. The ticket was like 400 something. I wasn't speeding or anything. Was driving a minivan with 6 other people in the car and I took that turn at like 15mph if even.

I called and talked to an attorney and he said you can fight it, but this one you might just have to eat cause it'll boil down to your word vs the cop's word. It'd be hard to prove that you didn't turn on a red w/o stopping.
