i have a small tear in the passanger side of my soft top next to one of the crossmembers. i have seen several s2's with tears here, it is the result of a bend in the metal tubing that slowly frays then tears away the fabric above it.
i patched the tear today at a local apholstry shop, it is still visible from the outside but will (hopefully) not get any worse and the tear is now sealed for wheather purposes. i had them put a patch on the driver side too as a preventative measure, i suggest spending the 30 bucks before a tear develops to reenforce the area.
go check the inside of your top and you should see what im talking about. a pic of a pretty bad tear in this thread:
