Default Pacific Coast Highway

I'm thinking of driving along the coastline to go to Monterey next week and I'm wondering how many hours it would take. Has anyone in here actually tried driving this route?

Thanks!

Do you intend to go on a weekend? Holiday weekend? What time did you want to start and where are you coming from (San Diego or Dana Point)?

Also, a fun little side excursion would be to go on a Saturday and start out at Crystal Cove. Stay there from 7 to 9 AM, see all the exotic cars then drive from there. Figure the drive to Monterey will be an all day trip if you stay on PCH.

Don't drive up it all the way, it's a total mess! I thought that would be fun once and tried it, but it's just annoying stop and go through Santa Barbara. Take 5 all the way to the other side of the grapevine. Then get on 58W at Buttonwillow/Mckittrick... that's seriously 70 miles of twisties. It dumps you near SLO, then take 101 up from there! It's a long drive though, give yourself a good 10 hours since it is the scenic route!
