From what I can tell, it's "safe" to clay any time you want, but unnecessary unless the polish has deteriorated.

Be careful of how you interpret that last Wax Test ... they applied the Zaino on top of a car polish (ie, they washed the panel, then polished it, then waxed it). This keeps Zaino, and similiar products, from adhering to the paint properly.

Sounds like I need to order some zaino asap. By the way, I did a major boo boo and mistakingly used a towel that causes many, many hairline surface scratches. Does any of the zaino stuff help remove or fill in this type of damage? clay? Thanks for your help.

>>>In that same test, they reported the Zaino "test panel" kept beading water for 7 months ! Nothing else even came close.<<<
Zaino's longevity seems to be an unused characteristic by some adherents. I mean it seems like some of the Zaino users apply additional coats all the time. If that is the case the longevity is kind of moot. And yet the appearance is lesser than some of the natural waxes like P21S/S100. Get my point?

The way you're explaining the scratches, the Z-5 should do a fine job of filling for the duration of the polish (6 months).
