i think it is necessary because the paint ages with the sun unless its a brand new car

Not a problem.
Most people have a misconception about blending.
Just to elaborate a bit more for people who care....(or are interested....)
Blending is done to fool the eye. Nothing more. To elaborate, let me use an example.....
Image a Sebring s2000. (I am using silver because matching it is VERY hard...shadow wise)
Now, suppose the fenders are BRAND new. Factory paint and all.
Now, suppose you got a new hood. You paint it at a good shop, with the proper code, and a proper painter/technique.
2 scenarios.
1)You install the hood with no blending into the fenders and bumpers. You will see a slight color variation (although its just the way the light hits it, the color is actually the same)....and wonder, WTF. The simply answer is...you are human. Your eyes are drawn to the crack (space) between the hood and fender, and that line gives you a DIRECT reference point to compair two paint colors.
2)You install the hood and have it blended into the fenders and front bumper. Same hood, but now you dont see any variations. What gives.....simple....Your eyes, once again, gravitate towards the spaces between panels (reference points) and cannot detect a difference.
Hope this makes sense...
Here are some pics....
This is a typical silver mismatch. The color is the same, but the way the light hits the metallic particles, makes the paint look darker on one panel than another.
This is a picture of an UNBLENDED sebring (i think) paintjob. In this pic, the door was "painted" without any blending to the fender. Do you see the color difference?
Now, this is the SAME door...the same color....but BLENDED with the fender....see how it matches now? This is an EFFECT, and cannot be replicated on a solid colored car. If the paint is off on a solid colored car, its just the wrong color, simple as that...
Hope everyone gets the idea, and understands what blending really is.
Have a good one guys!
P.S. The kicka$$ pics are thanks to ILLROLLER!

Haha, for a second there I thought my paint match was actually as bad as in the first picture
In any case my doors and fenders have been repainted, and the hood and rear quarters were blended.

No, I had basically a solid year of bad luck, I had to replace and/or repaint half of the body panels on my car... All of them were blended, so most people don't notice. Aside from my hood which looks like shit.
do you ever notice your fender getting chipped a lot? I know bumpers get chips like MAD, but i noticed on the S, there is a lot of chips on the fenders.
