Default Wheels permanently damaged from brake dust?

Good morning,

Occasionally I like to remove the wheels from my S to clean them from both the outside and the inside. When I tried this yesterday, I noticed that the insides of the front wheels are spotted from brake dust. I tried washing them with a heavy concentration of Z-7, but it didn

I would try using clay.
If that didn't work, I'd move on to a strong wheel cleaner.

That that doesn't work, I MIGHT try an acid-based wheel cleaner, allowed to set for no more than a few seconds.

Metal and paint polishes are two options. It is possible that they are permanently damaged or need to be refinished using a buffing wheel and metal compounds and polishes.

I would try goop-off first then I would hit it with CLR or Limeaway which are both mild acidic solutions....remember to rinse well

I would try tall the above. I usually wash, clay, seal and the wheel wax the isides.

apparently the insides are plain metal - untreated!

I used the Z18 ClayBar from Zaino on my M-Class; The truck has known issues WRT excessive brake pad wear and I have never seen anything before that could dirty so fast and so completely. Until I used the ClayBar, it was always a losing battle . But with the Z18, I was able to remove about 95% of the brake dust.
Good Luck!

i did my monthly wash and wax 2 days ago. i used dawn on my car and had some of the water left over. (i have ungraded brakes and they dust a ton) the dawn worked amazing on getting the grime off. it usually takes about 10 minutes with a wheel brush, with the dawn and a MF rag it immediatly came off with ease. worth a shot. if the wheels are back on the car be careful rinsing because the dawn might spray onto the paint and take your wax off.
