I dont know where to post this in this site but I had a question regarding the paint used on airplanes vs regular car paint. The reason I ask is because I heard Airplane paint is quite expensive and durable when compared to car paint.. If anyone is familiar and can give me some info would be greatly appreciated.. if i posted in the wrong section please move the thread and thanks again guys for any input

 

hmm thats an awesome question. they'd have to have some things in common as the temp of the paint can change by more than 100degrees in a single day, but i'm interested to know about the durability, the shine, etc

any paint expert's thoughts on this will be interesting

From my experiences I have a friend with a 69 camaro painted with airplane paint.. its been sitting at his house for over 4yrs and he RARELY washes it and the car doesnt look bad at all for the time its been painted.. this is what he told me.. Also this the paint is very glossy and doesnt require clear coat. this is all i have heard and also that a quart of airplane paint runs about over 600 as compared to a quart or car paint which is about 300-500 (thats including top of the line car paint) but this is why i posted here... Hopefully someone is familiar... Thanks again for your interest

why?? too cheap or expensive... im just giving a price range... correct me please how much does car paint run for from cheapest to most expensive.. or maybe price i put is for a gallon. im not sure.

 

its pretty expensive unless your talking about close to a gallon sprayable and also including base coat and clear

 

then it must be like you said..... for the galloon. Airplane paint is not like you can just purchase it whenever or whereever. Its very exclusive.. and i know some1 who works with aiplanes and their comapny obviously buys everything at wholesale and no tax since its to resell the products.. well at wholesale and w/o tax airplane paint with basecoat (w.e. kit brings) i can get it for 200 just quart and 500 gallon and so at retail it should be close to about 1000 give or take which is what some have told me... so that part makes sense...so its not cheap paint but i jus wanna know if its good paint or if anyone knows about it.. just relying on its price I would say it better be good but not everything expensive is good... but such a difference in price like these is a big deal

 

what defines "good" paint to you?

really the only thing your base coat is for is the color. The clear coat is where your going to get your shine, extra color, clearness, hardness, uv protection. There are clear coats that are extremely durable that are sold by automotive manufacturers. PPG, Lesonal, HOK, DuPont, sell VERY high end clears that can withstand, heat, scratches, rock chips, have a lot of uv protection as well.

so what are you looking for?

 

to my little knowledge you dont need a clear when using A/C paint (Aircraft ).. '
To me good paint would be durable, not easily faded by sun or other sorts of temperatures etc, the process for which the outcome to be good... then again durable also is a big dependent on preparation.. The less quality the less prep i guess therefore crappy paint.. Idk help me out here lol ... i mean what do you look for in good paint or a good paint job obviously a goood paiont job is based on detail and prep and after paint good hands buffing wetsanding and what not... help me out here
