Off the top of my head...
1. Don't washwax in direct sunlight.
2. Don't double dip when washing, have two buckets. One rinse bucket and one soap bucket.
3. Don't skimp out on quality towels, I cannot imagine life without Microfiber towels these days.
4. Buy a quality wash mitt (sheepskin is my favorite at the moment).
5. When dropping your car off at the dealer, ask them NOT to wash it.
6. Do not touch or wipe a dirty car.
7. Check your oil frequently.
8. Keep a nice layer of wax/sealant on your car. It makes it much easier to wash and helps preserve the life of your paint.
9. When polishing, always use the least aggressive product/pad/pressure first and work your way up.

For interior I like Lexol/303 products.

Waffle Weave MF (Pakshak) = Drying the car.
My green MF (Cobra) = Glass cleaning
My blue MF (Pakshak) = Taking off polish/wax
My yellow MF (Costco) = Door jams, trunk jams, and dash.
I used to use finishing cloth but MF wears much better IME.

great answers above to the what not to do to the car-
the only addition i would make is to never take it to any kind of car wash that doesnt let you wash it yourself (dangers of most car washes are: swirls from rags they use, scratches from the brushes/ felt they sometimes use, rim damage from the conveyer type belt systems they use, and top/ seal damage from pressure- examples of all of these have been posted)
you also asked about the interior-
imo, the best quailty products are:
vinyl: vinylex
leather: townsend cleaner and also their preservative
my second choices:
vinyl: 303
leather: lexol cleaner and also their preservative
