Ugh I had this sickening feeling - hadn't work these one pair of pants in a while. they have protruding button "catches" like the old school levis buttons (i.e. like mushroom shaped if you looked at them from the side.)

getting in my car the other day, I felt the one catch the bolster as I seated myself and felt it catch like {bump...bump...bump...} thinking "oh that can't be good" - got back out of the car and noticed a series of small, not all-the-way-thru-the-leather nicks where the leather was caught - kind like if you ran a thorny branch along the leather...

besides burning the pants in effigy, what should my next steps be to remedy this situation...

Your best bet, would be to get them reupholstered. I don't know if you can repair leather or not.
