I was thinking that a metal polish would be more appropriate if not clear coated. However, if there is a clear coat, then a paint polish would be the product of choice.
With regard to p21s ... is the "gel" a stronger product or just a more concentrated form of the original?

email answer i got from the owner of the autopia site:
"They are not. In fact, the back side of most wheels are lucky to get anything more than just grey primer.

also at:

and my understanding is that the gel is a completely different product from the car shampoo...

My 99 Lude rims were the same way.

Yeah ... I agree.
After reading the above posts I ordered the p21s wheel cleaner but it didn't touch the insides which are dull and pitted from previous owner and Wisconsin winters.
I ended up using SOS pads and some metal polish I had on the shelf.
I was able to brighten them up but they still have tiny corrosion pits.
The p21s worked well on the fronts. Did some checking and the instructions for the gel says you can leave it on for two hours for wheels in bad shape. I didn't get the gel, just the spray on.
However, I don't think it would have worked on the blemmishes and corrosion I was dealing with. Probably a very good product for getting off brake dust and road grime on the front of the wheel which has a clearcoat.
I'm hoping that a good coat of wax on the insides before winter will prevent my having to repeat this process.
Would a synthetic or a carnuba be best for this?

heat at the wheels will evaporate carnuba- that said, i use products that contain carnubas (wheel wax is one of them) blended with synthetics sometimes.
