Default Rubbers and lubricant

Does anyone put the silicone lubricant on the rubbers seals where the windows/windshield and the convertible top approximate? I'm afraid that they will start leaking, and I don't want the rubber to crack (seems it always does, even in non-convertible cars).

What did you think the post was about?

Yes, do a search for Shin Etsu. That's the silicone grease that Honda sells for that exact purpose. HandA, one of the board sponsors, sells it for ~$12.00 for a tube that should last several years if you do your seals every six months or so. The same grease from the local Honda dealer was listed at ~$25.00. I suppose you could find something just as good and cheaper at your local AutoZone/Pep Boys, just make sure it doesn't contain petroleum distallates. They'll eat the rubber.

I was amazed at how effective Zymol's "Seal" rubber protectant is. It is uses 100% natural ingredients and leaves your rubber components extremely supple. I love the stuff!

The downside is that like all Zymol products it isn't the cheapest stuff around...

Hi Red

Many congrat's on the arrival of your new S2000!

I have the Honda recommended Shin Etsu grease, and I guess that it does a good job at protecting the rubber seals. However, it is foul stuff to put on, and seems to remain on the surface of the seals for yonks (maybe that's the idea!). This makes all of the seals a no-touch zone, they attract all sorts of dust and cr*p, and each time the side windows go up, they get a thin coating of the nasty stuff.

I guess that it is a necessary evil, but it really is not nice stuff.

So Red... How much is this stuff? ...and does it leave the rubber gooey? (now if THAT doesn't attract a joke, I give up! ) I will explore AutoZone and the like and get back to you. I have ordered SOOOO much car care stuff online, my woman tells me Remy gets more make-up than a two-bit whore! So if I can get something good in person, that would be grrrrrreat.

Awesome. Thanks Tifosi. I think I'll do that. I'm assuming a tube lasts quite a while... ?

I actually JUST went to a Car-X autoparts store and asked if they have any such sealant. The young man looked at me blankly, and I directed him out the window at Remy for a visual aid (obviously not a verbal learner. You know, needs to count with his fingers) and asked again. He told me they don't carry many parts for "foreign cars." LOL I HAD to reply, "So you don't have axle grease if it's for a toyota?" I don't think he even knew enough to be offended by my retort and simply replied, "..doubt it." I decided to leave at that point, chuckling under my breath.
