has anyone done a 3-bucket method? one soapy water, one to rinse before dipping back into soapy, and a third to throw water on the car to rinse it off?

You might want to try a rinseless wash. I use Optimum No Rinse, with a two-bucket method and it's quick, easy, not messy, and delivers great results. My S is not a DD however, and I never let it get too dirty so this works well for me.

I have used Protectal's Quick and Easy wash for years. It was the product that the Optimum and other products were created to compete with. I have found that they all work about the same, it just happens that I can get the QEW locally and for about $20 for a GALLON.
You have to get the technique right and the car, like others said, can't be that dirty. If done correctly though, you will not harm the surface at all.
