Default Polishing/Compounding?

Doesn't polishing/compounding end up removing part of your clearcoat during the process. I'm asking because I've noticed that my finish isn't glassy smooth when you rub your fingers along it. Now I've thought about compounding it just because of the way she feels (she looks fine otherwise), but again, I also don't want to take off any of the clearcoat as well. Any thoughts on this?

I've seen these mentioned before. Just what exactly are they how to they work? Where do you get them? Should you wax again after using one?

I think the abrasive properties of polishing and rubbing compounds are not friendly to clear coat. I've used compounds on a previous car some years back, and it dulled the area I applied it to.
