waxing is like putting on the varnish sorta
does that help a bit??
two diff processes for two diff reasons. you wax a lot and polish every once in a while...
yes, polish is for getting rid of swirls and any surface imperfections, but it wont protect the paint- thats what wax does.
and as you have suggested, polish is the oldtimers clay!

A polish usually contains some form of abrasives. Zaino is an exception because they call it "polish" even though it contains no abrasives. There can be polishes with harsh abrasives for dull, swirled and heavily oxidized paint or polishes for just lightly cleaning the surface.
Polishing is the most important step of the entire process. If your paint is dull, oxidized and swirled it won't matter what kind of wonder wax you apply to it, it won't show depth or shine. Polishing a car removes layers of oxidation, scratches, swirls, sap and hard water spots.
You always polish before you glaze and wax. Mostly a wax or synthetic polymer is for protection of your car's finish. The waxes and polymers usually contain some form of oils or silicones to make them appear wet.
Here's a hood that has merely been polished. I have applied no wax yet. This is using DACP and SWP polishes from Meguiar's.

Just get Zaino, follow the instructions...yes it is expensive, but it is the best product I have ever used and that I have ever seen
and no...clay barring just removes everything out of the clear coat, like brake dust and so forth...it does not remove swirls...
also, if you get Zaino, don't skip the clay bar step!
