Here is what I do, and have done so for years. In the spring I go to the fabric store and buy a couple yards of pure white polar fleece, you want the good kind that does not pill (the little balls on a sweater).

I then cut it into strips the size I want. I use only these rags for washing the car and after each car wash I wash them in the washer after dry them in the dryer. Polar fleece will not absorb a lot of water so it can not be used for drying, but the stuff is so soft it will not scratch.

After the rag has turned from pure white to a beige color I throw it away or I use it to do a real nasty job like wipe up oil, then I throw it away. The reason I do this is because for way less money I get to use a perfectly clean rag for a few times and then throw it away so I never have to worry about a tiny piece of grit stuck in the cleaning mit.
