When mine gets dull looking, I use super fine steel wool on it first, then some Mother's mag and aluminum polish.
I sort of think that any wax or sealant isn't going to last long at all, given that exhaust systems get very very hot.

Regular upkeep. Just wipe it off every few days with glass cleaner or something similar.
If the soot really builds up, or it just looks dull, break out an orbital buffer and some metal polish. You can do it by hand, though the results won't be as good.
