Honestly you can use either, but I'm always paranoid about there being a film or something left over from the clay that Z7 won't take care of. Honestly you could use either, but the whole idea behind claying a car is getting down to a completetly bare clearcoat. So going to scratch as you say is exactly where you want to be.

One more question, when wiping off the polish with a towel, do I also use a horizontal motion which is used to apply the polish? Or should I wipe off with a circular motion?

You will be able to just wipe it off with one stroke in the direction applied. This stuff comes off so easy it's disgusting
Although, it really shouldn't matter too much as long as you are using a high quality towel.

quick_lude,
Reading through all the instructions for all the Zaino products, the only thing related to direction was with the Z5, which said NOT to use a circular motion (obvious for a swirl remover ). That was printed on the bottle, I think, since I can't find it on the zaino web site.
Since the Zaino products are non-abrasive and don't have any oils or waxes, it shouldn't matter what direction you use.

As far as putting on Z5/2 it really does make a difference in the shine. I don't know why, but it will make the edges shine like crazy when you go parallel front to back direction on the parallel surfaces and up and down on the perpendicular surfaces.
BIG DIFFERENCE. Just try it and you'll see your edges shine even more!!
