Default Gunk in my engine bay?

I haven't had my s2000 for too long. I've tackled the task of cleaning the exterior and interior almost meticulously (with what time I have) since I've owned it. Now that I've searched some diy's on engine bay cleaning, I plan on doing a thorough clean-up once I get the right supplies. I've noticed this "gunk" (or whatever it is) in certain parts of my engine bay and am curious as to what it is. Could it be the result of almost 12 years without cleaning? I've used some engine degreaser and it's proven to be effective. You can tell where I've worked on it. I own a MY00 SSM and here are the pics.

I guess, I mean I've seen pics of clean engine bays and I didn't see that.

Gross, Seems to be a mess. I would unbolt what you can around each area, and work some engine bay cleaners with brushes till its gone. That black junk shouldn't' be there.

Ive unbolted alot when I did my engine bay and it was such a huge difference!!

I'm pretty sure it's not, nothing looks botched or unusual and nothing seems to be funky about the car other than that crap in my engine bay. I would think it'd be rust proofing or something but idk. lol I do suspect that maybe the first owner drove it in the snow or something a while ago because I was told my lower control arms were frozen when I was having an alignment done. That's kinda why I was thinking rust proof but then again, it could be anything. But since the car is not acting weird, I'm kind of starting to shrug it off lol.

On a different note, it may be time for a TCT repair though lol
