i use straight lines.
my very strong preference is to use a porter cable for any polishing- you will find out why very soon if you attempt this by hand!!
i do a "box" about 2 x 2 feet.
up and back up and back until the box is done- then side to side side to side until the box is done. some folks then do diagonals too.
then repeat and keep repeating until the polish hazes. then remove the small hazed amounts and you should have perfection. move on to the next box and keep that up until the car is done.
then wax - as the air flows over the car is how i do it (front to back)
does that help?
