Default The Dreaded Dead Animal Smell

I posted this up over in the Ohio section but its probably a good idea to talk to the experts (aka you guys) and see what you think....

I had a terrible weekend in driving my S2k. It's my only form of transportation since my Accord is in the shop gettings its windows replaced and the doors repainted from a break in.

It all started last night (Saturday evening). I was headed to Fremont to watch some sprint car races and this raccoon ran out in front of me. Some dude was tailgating me pretty hard and I thought about slamming the brakes but he would have rear ended me easily. There was also another car coming the opposite direction so I couldn't swerve to miss it. Needless to say, I hit it. Didn't do any cosmetic damage, but it sure did smell a whole bunch. Had blood and guts all underneath the car. Had no time to clean it before the races so I stopped at a car wash after the races and sprayed all underneath it and cleaned as much as I could (it was dark).

Then I went to Toledo after the races... on my way home to BG from Toledo I hit another, even bigger, raccoon. Again, no where to go and it ran out in front of me.

I couldn't go to Cars and Coffee today because when I woke up and went into my garage the smell was terrible. I spent 8 hours cleaning the undercarriage and spraying everything down with vinegar. It helped a lot, but some of the smell is still there... it's not as bad anymore, but just a tiny lingering.

Anyone have any suggestions on cleaning the undercarriage... products, concoctions, remedies?

Never had that issue, but I'd imagine simple green should remove a lot of odor. If not, you might need to pick up odo-ban from walmart. It removes any bacteria! You'll probably need to remove the front wheels and clean the tires really well.

That's a new one for me.. I can't help but say that I got a laugh after reading your story. Sorry about your bad luck though, I did find this little excerpt. Maybe it'll help. Absorbing the odor might be the right idea.

In the meantime, spray enzyme cleaner/deodorizer inside the home. Look for OdoBan, Nature's Miracle, Out, or other brand. Activated charcoal from pet store, kitty litter, baking soda, and coffee grounds are frequently used as odor absorbers. Here's a link to Odor Absorbing Bags used by professionals: http://www.cleartheair.com/shop/dead...l-remover.html

Until you remove the bits and pieces of raccoon from the underside/elsewhere you will have an odor issue. Put the car on a lift or jack stands and wash or physically remove any remains from the car. Afterward any APC should work for deodorizing purposes. Tough week for the raccoon's.

All of the bits and pieces should be gone... I took the rear bumper cover off, some covers underneath the rear end off and cleaned everything out and sprayed it down with vinegar. Smell is 99.9% gone.

I'm going to spray everything down with simple green tomorrow.

I couldn't find OdoBan at Walmart today... I might have to look elsewhere for it.

My son-in-law had someone vomit in his car. He googled and used Baking soda. No more smell.

be sure to follow up with some dressing after using APC on rubber parts, that stuff is strong and can dry out plastic.s

Went out to the garage this morning and the smell is all gone. Looks like a vinegar wipe down underneath and baking soda sitting under the car for two nights did the trick. And I didn't even have to use an APC.

Bought some OdoBan for good measure at Home Depot.

Sprayed/wiped down the inside of the rear bumper cover (Where most of the smell was coming from) and now I don't smell anything for real... not even a slight hint.

Works wonders.
