Does the 2000 have single stage paint?
While polishing my new 2000 / NFR with a Porter Cable I noticed some red appearing on the buffer pad. Apparently the 2000 does not have a clear coat but single stage paint. Am I right? Or is this only with certain colors such as the red?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Some are are actually tri-coats like Spa but none of them are single stage. I don't know why red seems to do that. All i can think of is that the clear is slightly tinted like a candy job.

I checked on color rite. It is a 2 part process. Base and clear. If you are pulling red on the buffer you have gone through the clear coat. I have not really seen the New formula red upclose. But usually if there is a sparkle "pearl" it is a 3 part process. Base > Pearl > Clear. The base is like a flat red that is designed to 'cover' the pearl is a combo of white pearl and red much lighter than the base. The Clear is the finishing touch and gives the paint that shine. It is really pretty cool how it works together.

No, no... you haven't gone through your clear coat. This has been discussed several times before... if you can get the search to work then read some of the older threads. PeaceLove&S2K is correct in that the clear coat is actually tinted to add to the color of the base coat. Honda has done this to other vehicles in the past. My previous vehicle was a red integra. I often ended up with pink pads after polishing, and I can assure you I had not gone through the clear.

Thanks for the replies.
I couldn't imagine how I went through the clear coat. After all it's a new car and I'm the first to detail it. Plus I was very gentle with the whole process.
After applying Optimum polish I finished with 1 coat of UPP. Fortunately I keep it garaged so I'll be able to maintain the look.
The car looks superbly beautiful !

Not to start an argument, but I recently had some minor body damage repaired by a very good paint specialist. He contacted Honda about the paint on my 2000 S and was told that the car had single stage paint.(NFR)

I've seen pads - after HAND polishing SS red paint - and they were WAY more red than any pad I've seen "pink up" after being used on an NFR. This alone would lead me to believe that that paint is 2-stage.
Looking at the BASF Glasurit color finder, it's SEEMS evident that NFR is a 2-stage paint (two steps for many of the various formulations) and in any instance where there are two steps listed, they share one common component - likely the color/tint. Some of the Milano Red formulations appear to be SS, as well (some contain lead!).
Of course, you could always try and find a scrapped NFR panel and go at it with some sandpaper and buffer and whatnot to try and determine if there are multiple layers that pink up a pad more underneath the outermost, presumably tinted clear layer.
But what do I know?

Let's put this one to rest once and for all.
I found the 2003 Factory Honda/Acura Color charts.
Paint Code------Color Description--------Touch-Up Paint
R-510-------------New Formula Red *-----08703-r510AA
* A small amount of color is mixed in the clear coat and applied over the color coat.
