Do car covers damage your paint??

I've always had this concern about using car covers. I'm sure they are great when the car is clean, but the first time it's driven, there is dust on the paint. Even soft fabrics over this dust would seem to have the potential of scratching the paint. I'm considering buying a cover to use at work to help prevent dings, but unless I wash the car every day, I'm afraid I'll get scratching.
What do you guys think?

My car is garage-kept and I only drive it in good weather.
Given that, I do use the Honda OEM Dust Cover in the garage but only after I have California Dusted the car first so that no dirt will collect on the inside of the cover and scratch the finish.
Hope this helps.

I am able to fold and unfold my car cover in less than 30 seconds by doing it in a systematic way. It also minimizes draging the cover over the paint. In fact I can't imagine doing any harm the way I use the cover. If you are using the cover at work, then the numerous benefits will out weigh any possible disadvantage.

Good question; I got mine as a free-bee so it's still in the box. I think it's biggest benefit would be when traveling. When staying at a motel, I'll take my chances of scratching it with a cover that I'm going to be carefull with vs. parking next to some jerk with a car full of people who's only interest is to see how fast they can get in the pool or unload the car.

i cover my black car in the office garage every day. also dust it every 2 or 3 days. the honda cover is really soft. it gets washed when the car gets washed (i have 2- used to send one to the dry cleaners, but found that they are pretty easy to machine wash). no scratch problems...
