Difference between polisher and angle grinder?
guys,
prolly dumb but whats the diff between the porter cable polisher and a say angle grinder with adjustable speed from dewalt?
I have used a grinder with a cutting pad before and works fine.
I am about to get into some more serious detailing and want to know if i need to buy a PC or if i can stick with my grinder.

An angle grinder spins in a clockwise direction around a center point like a rotary polisher.
The Porter Cable is a random orbit machine. The pad moves back and fourth in a random elliptical path that ensures it travels different paths and directions almost everytime it moves from one side to another. This decreases the opportunity for your abrasives to cut the same path and is much easier on your paint. It doesn't generate as much heat as a rotary so it is less effective at removing flaws. However, it is much safer than a rotary or angle grinder.
I have an angle grinder and there's no way I could get a pad on mine without a lot of modification.
The real problem is that MOST angle grinders do not have a speed control and operate in the 10,000-11,000 rpm range. First your pad will come apart. Second, at 10,00 rpm's you'll generate way too much heat from friction.
There are some more expensive models of grinders that have a speed control but I have yet to see one with anything less than about 3000 rpms. Most of the time my rotary machine lives in the 1200-1500 rpm range.

wow thanks for the info.
For my rotoary grinder i just stick a 6 inch velcro backing pad and i am ready to go for whatever need i want.
I did not know the PC was an orbital buffer vs a rotary.
What is it that most people use here?

really hard to beat the pc for easy of use and safety of paint-
