What an old thread! I use S-100 cleaner that I use on my bike to clean the engine. It is works great, just spray the entire compartment and hose it off. I don't cover anything, just spray it all. Then I let it completely dry and spray CD2 engine brightner (stuff is awsome) all over the engine. Go by instructions on can and you will have the cleanest engine ever. My engine still looks brand new after 33k. miles.

I'd say that anything petroleum based will degrade the rubber and plastic parts in there. Harsh degreasers may stain engine parts (if left on for too long). I was speaking generally...as in "water can come into contact with all engine parts, but watch out for some chemicals."

Any one used silicon spray in the engine bay to get the shine and dress it?

Silicone is kinda greasy and is a lubricant. If you get it onto the serpentine belt, it'll slip. I wouldn't use it except maybe to treat the rad and heater hoses and anything else that's rubber (other than the belt). It's not a real good "dressing" product for most of what's in the engine bay.

Good point
Did it to today and put nothing on after I cleaned it.
I reckon I'll leave it like that!

i've used good old zaino and wolfgang soap in a bucket and do it by hand. With a bunch of old dirty rags. Then then 303 protectant over hoses as a final dressing

thanks for the simple green alert.. i'll be sure to stay away..

I hear Poorboys make a great engine cleaning product..

Yep... I bumped this cause I had a question. I have a Power Washer that you can hook up a soap clean feed that mixes with the water to clean... would that be ok?

Could I just use regular car washing soap to clean out the engine bay?

Thank You,
Andre

Personally, I wouldn't use power washer in an engine bay to avoid getting water forced where it shouldn't be. A good foamy engine detergent (CD, gunk etc..) and hose water is all it takes.
