Default Cleaning exhaust cans

I'd like to clean my HKS Silent Hi-power cans, they are covered in tar spots etc.

Since it is stainless steel, would petrol be ok to clean them or what is used.

* petrol used on a cold exhaust

I would use an aluminum/chrome wheel polish like the one made by Mother's.

Lacquer thinner/paint thinner or turpentine work very well on tar. Afterward, any residue easily washes off and then you can apply your favorite polish.
