Thumbs up Caring for Leather on my MB

I'm new to these forums, so I hope I don't violate any protocol by asking about a MB ... if so, just let me know & I'll go away quietly.

I have a new 2006 MB E55. The seats are Nappa leather with Nubuck inserts. I am trying to figure out how to care properly for these kinds of leather.

The car manual is pretty worthless. The one thing it does say is NOT to us MB leather treatment on the Nubuck leather.

I have been doing some research & visiting MB forums, but so far no one can really tell me how to care for my seats. Some people say use nothing but damp microfiber towels. Others tout specific products (but those products often warn about their use of glove-like leather or suede-like leather).

Can you provide any specific guidance?

No one will give you a problem with asking a question about your MB. I don't have an answer for you personally, but I wanted to put your mind at ease. Anyway, you might also want to put this question or search for its answer on Autopia. There are a lot of pro detailers who frequent that board and they will almost definitely be able to give you an answer. Not to say there aren't a lot of great detailers on this site, but they may not have encountered this type of surface before.

Hey Hook,

We will definitely help you with your questions over here, we are all just big auto fans (well at least most of us are).

Please check out the thread in my signature for a bunch of general leather info, but for yours specifically you do have a few options.

As for the regular finished leather, go about cleaning it like you would any other finished leather, but do not get the inserts wet as they have the potential to stain from both the conditioner and the cleaner. If you don't have any products you are happy with now, pm me and I can help you out with that.

As for the nubuck, there are two different products we offer to clean it. There will be NO wet cleaners used on it. We do have a conditioner that you can use, but I would use it less than once annually. To do a general cleaning there are nubuck brushes which will gently clean the surface and prevent the nap from being matted down over time. You could also use an abrasive pad (white) but this takes a little skill so you may want to practice with the brush first anyways. It is a natural rubber brush, so no streaks or scuffs can be made when cleaning.

1. You could use it, but then again I wouldn't.

2. We = The Leather Institute, www.leatherinstitute.com

3. The nap you have may be very slight, thats why it looks almost like a plain aniline leather rather than a nubuck. When they say it is sanded, they take an aniline leather, buff or sand it and it creates a nubuck.

4. Is alcantara a fabric or a leather like material?

Hope this helps, let me know if you need any more assistance.
