Oh yes. Clay does a multitude of jobs. But one of those jobs is to remove the fall out and sediment that's on/in the paint. Claying a car is a must before any machine polish or compound. It will help your pads last so much longer and it will also allow the polish or compound to actually do the work its suppose to do, not try and cut through the dirt all over the car, ruining your pads.
For a hands on experience, give this a try on your car. In the shade or the garage(better), mask off half the hood with blue painters tape. Clay one side and not the other, washing them both the same way with the same soapy bucket. Now dry the hood and pull off the tape.
The clayed side will feel much cleaner and smoother and if the paint is beat up enough like in the pictures below, it will also look better.
If you do that you'll understand why right away.
