It is nearly impossible to burn the paint with a dual action polisher. Start with the least aggressive polish needed to get results and work your way up until it removed the defects. Then taper off to finer polishes. They polishers are so cheap you can't lose if you are picky about maintaining a detailed car. Check out auto geek.net for tutorials that will ease your nerves. It really is very simple and makes hand polishing totally unnecessary. You can even practice on an older car or a piece of scrap from a junkyard.

if you like the looks of hand polishing, you'll be blown away by machine polishing
I bet it would look great but I'm to worried about ruining my paint. I'm unsure of what I'm doing even with a hand polish.LOL
Interesting note: changes of ruining paint might be higher with hand polishing than a PC.

You can't generate the same amount of movement as the PC. Also you can't apply the same even pressure as a PC as easily.

My neighbor wants to polish and apply a sealant on his Mercedes. He asked me to show him how to do it by hand. I showed him a BMW M3 I just detailed and he was blown away. I ordered a clay bar, lube, M105 and Blackfire Wet Diamond Protection. I told him he can try M205 on a panel by hand, then an adjoining panel using the Porter DA with me observing. I bet him a 6 pack that he will prefer the Porter. In fact, I am so confident I'm betting he will buy my Porter which has detailed over 200 vehicles for a fair price. He is only detailing twice a year so the Porter has years of use with him. I will use the money to buy another Porter or a Flex and we will both be happy.
