Default Your parents' favorite sayings

Do you have family members who have a favorite saying? You've heard them say it over and over, but they always seem to find a situation where it applies.

I've got a couple.

Mom in retirement: "It just goes to show you you never know what you are going to do when you get up in the morning."

We often hear this one if we call her up last minute and invite her to dinner or on an outing. My siblings and I all tease her about it.

Another from Mom: "If you wait long enough, you'll get it." Now that one does not always come true. However they were not from the "instant gratification" generation, so sometimes they had to wait for something they wanted, and sometimes they got it. We heard that one a lot as kids.

Then of course there is the mother's/parent's curse: "May you have a child just like you."

I threw my dad a surprise party for his 70th and we read a top ten list of his famous quotes. Most not repeatable and only funny to us. His favorite was to call his kids "sh*tbirds" when we got older and when we were little he told us we always looked like "rag-a-muffins" We had to drive past the state pen on the way to the lake house every weekend and he would point to it and tell us that is where we would end up. He also made us refer to him as "oh great patron".

The one thing he said that always stuck with me was when I was about to sell a used car to a coworker at age 17, and a day before the sale it developed a minor problem, I asked my dad if I had to disclose it to this guy and he said, "Well maybe not legally, but if you don't have integrity then what have you got?" My dad was driven by high moral standards and I have tried to be an honest person because that is what he raised us to be.

I love my dad with all my heart. He was the best father anyone could ask for. My mom is a different story and a pain in the butt.

My Dad used to say: "I'll give you something to cry about." And "He/she/you, need to be brought down a peg or two."

I think that one is universal.

Yep, when a kid is whining, it's just the thing to say!

"You don't like it slide it back. Pap likes it".

My Dad when something unpalatable turned up at dinner.
