BTW, how's it in Colorado?
Do whatever you have to, Patty, to relive that stress load. You're under a lot, and not just from the heat. Be mindful. Stress is a killer; ask me how I know.

Dunno. I'm back in Houston for a few days. I'll be back in CO on Monday. It's still 50s at night and warmer in the daytime.

I'll ask but will you tell? How do you know that stress is a killer, grannyrod?

You beat me to the punch...no wonder you call yourself "Zippy"
As to the poll, get the outa here, I'd be the antithesis of squeaky clean.

Traveler, what kind of work do you do you skallywag? I'm strictly scientific/commercial these days, but used to do a lot of yacht work back in my 100/500/1600 ton days.

More on topic, I did a sailing circumnavigation back in the 70's with my family. I distinctly recall learning a whole new vocabulary one horribly rough night in the Gulf Stream, handing my father tools as he lay in the hot and filthy bilge under our 15 year old Hanomag diesel trying to change a water pump impeller.
I'm in the software business. I used to visit our customers to give them advice on how to use our product. Now I visit the people who do my old job, and give them advice.

How big a vessel is 100, 500 or 1600 tons? The biggest thing I've ever sailed is in my avatar. But I have no idea what she weighed. I had the opportunity to learn some Dutch swear words while I was on board, but I've forgotten all of them.

There is a time and a place for everything. Curse words, including the f word, have a great deal of effect if they're not over used. When over used they lose all of their meaning.

For example I used to work next to a very prim and proper woman. She would only use proper English except when her computer would crash. When that would happen we'd hear a few strong words. Because she used them so rarely, when she did you knew something was terribly wrong.

Like I said there is a time and place for everything.

This question, liks so many, does not have a simple answer. The 100, 500, and 1600 gross tonnage license limits were originally intended for U.S. domestic gross tonnage admeasured vessels.
Like all old government regulations, over the years people (naval architects in this case) came up with a myriad of ways to circumvent the regulations, placing larger and larger (real world size) vessels into smaller and smaller tonnage brackets. (thus reducing the amount of regulations and crewing requirements applying to said vessels) At one point you could have a vessel 300-400 ft. long and carrying 1500 passengers in the 100 ton or less bracket, when in reality, the vessel was 2000 tons.
Presently there is much more standardization under the new IMO regulations (International Maritime Organization) so that a vessel of 1600 tons actually displaces something like 1600 tons. The USCG which regulates such things in the US, is still in the process of trying to bring the licensing structure into line with the IMO requirements, (we are in year 8 or 9 of this process) they are WAY too busy being the DHS to get this crap done in a timely manner.

A short general answer:
100 tons < 150 ft. length overall.
500 tons < 250 ft.
1600 tons < 400 ft.
Arrrggh Matey!
Mike

Yours is one opinion. Thank you for it, Rob. That's what I wanted with this thread. My opinion is different, about the overuse and effectiveness .
