There's about 15 adult communities in Monroe now. Some more active than others. Some go back 30+ years, others are new in the last few. If you ever find out, holler.

Rob,

Nice to know that some things in your old neighborhood are still the same.

On the other hand, if you were to go to the Queens neighborhood that we both used to live in you would not recognize anything along Liberty Ave except for the "El" (Elevated Train for you non-New Yorkers) that is the southern end of the line for the famed "A Train".

A few weeks ago, my Mother, who has been living in Riverhead Long Island since 1987 was lamenting (as she often does) about how much she misses the neighborhood that she called home for forty-nine years. I sarcastically suggested that we drive into Richmond Hill to have lunch and suggested that we go to the following places to eat:

Jahn's (since 1897) Hillside & Myrtle Avenues: GONE
Sorrento's Italian Restaurant (two doors from Jahn's: GONE
Levinson's Deli (117 ST & Liberty Ave) GONE
Schaffer's Ice Cream Parlor (Lefferts Blvd & Liberty Ave) GONE
Carlo's Pizzeria (Lefferts & Liberty) GONE
The Habrau House (Jamaica Ave & Mytrle Ave) GONE
The Mohawk (121 St & Jamaica Ave) GONE
Schlosser's Deli (114 ST & Jamaica Ave) GONE
Russo's Restaurant (101 Ave & Lefferts Blvd) GONE

I could go on, but I think that you and others get the picture.

If one goes to our old neighborhood in Queens it will serve one well if one can read either Hindi or Parsi if you wish to know what the signs state or what kind of business is there now.

The sign at the Brooklyn entrance to the Williamsburg Bridge now says, "Leaving Brooklyn, Oy Vey"

....and the sign leaving Brooklyn into Queens County on the MIA/POW Shore Parkway states: "Leaving Brooklyn. Fugheddaboudit" (NO KIDDING)

This is continued...his condo down there is for sale. Not sure how quickly it will sell because it is expensive. He is planning to move the listing to an international broker when he gets back from his visit here (he's coming mid June), since there are many international companies in his city. He always talked about moving back there. I never wanted to and knew it was going to be a problem when the time came to make that decision. I wanted to keep the base in DC and travel there. As it turns out, we separated long before he made the decision to go. But I'm very glad I wasn't involved. His GF was, however, and just did not adapt well to living there. She will be happy to be coming back.

My parents still live in the house I grew up in and we even still have a lot of the same neighbors that I grew up around so it is nice. I'll feel bad when my parents do decide to sell the house but as they say life moves on.

What's painful if they 'loved' their house and took pride in it, as my parents did, is to see it totally trashed out over the next several years by the next buyer. When we are traveling through PA we still stop and visit with the next door neighbor who's got'a be approaching 90. And every year the old homestead looks worse because of the lazy people who bought it.

Yes, that was a sad thing about my aunt's house in NC. I rented it out for a time after she came up here, then sold it. The whole neighborhood had been going downhill for years before she left and the house needed work. The renters did nothing to keep it nice. I stopped going by there when I was in town because it was too depressing, thinking of all the happy memories there. Fortunately, that won't happen with my mother's house. It might even be torn down and replaced with something a lot bigger. That is the trend around here because there is no land available. She also has two trees, one a huge cypress and the other a gorgeous Japanese maple that would really be upsetting to lose if the new owners were to cut them down.

The previous owners son of my parents house bought a house on the next street over and raised a family there, I was friends with his kids, and he would pop over every once in a while to check out the house he grew up in and like your parents Dave mine also keep a nice house so I'm sure he appreciated that.
