I'm old school in believing the three things that I don't talk about (or display) with others and I consider private - money, politics, religion.

We had a gathering here a few years ago. I joked about the three things to not discuss at parties. I told them if they must, they could discuss money, and religion, but NOT politics.

We were at a party a few years ago when the topic changed to politics. There were a few very vocal people who leaned a different way than we do. I politely asked them to change the subject, nope they kept on, extolling the virtues of their "guy." Due to my request, one woman there realized we didn't support her guy. She was appalled. It got a bit ugly and we left with apologies to the host. The host leans differently than we do, but he's not a jerk.

Nope, don't discuss politics unless you know the people you are with can actually have a civil conversation. Even then, since no one will change their mind, why bother? I'm happy that Rick and I are on the same page.

I can see how that can get uncomfortable in some social settings, so best to avoid those discussions if you can , but I understand how they can arise despite your best efforts.

My wife and son have their own political views and I always told them to vote for whoever they wanted and they didn't have to agree with my preference. I keep it pretty private even within my own home. My father always tried to force his kids to vote for his preferred candidate, he was a bit of a bully that way and I never liked it.

As far as religion goes, I firmly believe more people in this world have died for religious reasons than any other cause. It is crazy how people are so bent by religious beliefs and intolerance of other religions is so prevalent. I stay away from any religious discussions big time.

I think civil conversation between adults with differing opinions can be enlightening. Uncivil discussions have no value and discussions with people who can't even listen/acknowledge/empathize with others is even worse.

Not only would I not put a political sign in my yard (not only because one neighbor and I share the end of the road-no one else would see it) but I refrain from bumper/window stickers as well. I do have some "Navy" license plate holders but that is it. I don't want some jerk who disagrees keying my car or slamming his/her door into mine. I have read that even having an "AAA" insurance sticker invites intentional accidents for fraud.

Nope. No signs, no stickers, no shirts, etc. Regardless if I support and vote for them or not.

Dogmatic vs pragmatic discussions rarely last very long.

The only bumper sticker I'll likely ever put on one of my cars. "I'd rather be driving a Titleist"
