Question? In New York can you turn your plates in for storage and only pay for a partial year of registration?
I turn mine in every winter for the insurance break, but NY likes my money too much to give a refund on the registration.

With or without studded tires?
There are classes for all season tires, all the way up to Menard Ice Racing Tires.

No, the registration is not refunded, but you need to turn in the plates to cancel auto insurance. I only keep comprehensive on during the winter ($96 for the year).

Not studs, think bolts put through tires, studs are too wimpy

Yup! And just this morning I heard the Monroe County budget was passed and all registration fees will be jumping by $10.

I never used to turn in plates and cancel collision and liability, keeping only comprehensive when I had just the CRX-SiR stored, but when I went to 2 cars I just could not afford to be so foolish. I end up with about a $500 savings annually on insurance by turning in my plates and knocking back to comprehensive coverage only.

Now, as far as registration fees go, nothing is more screwed up than NYS and trailers. All trailers are registered for 1-year, and they are all on the same schedule, and you can not register for only a portion of the year like most of us use them. The annual fee is $80, no matter what...

And now they want to raise our thruway fees? WTF? DON'T GET ME STARTED ON NYS!!!!!!!!

I like your routine, Doug. Sounds like you enjoy life with diversions. I spent several years in Ithaca, so I know what the road salt does to cars -- used to be much worse. After a couple of years you couldn't aim your headlights anymore, they drooped down through the fenders.
Aaaahhhhhhhhh, Ithaca, one of my favorite places on earth. I too have spent a good deal of time there, Grandpa was a famous Entomology Prof at Cornell and Memma his wife was Dean of Women at Ithaca College. My friends went to Cornell and I used to stay with them in Risley Hall during my vacations from college. What wonderful memories, and yes, I too remember headlight issues like that, in high school I drove a '67 Ford Fairlane 500, 2 stacked headlights per side, the bottom ones were always an issue...

Oh, and the real fun part of winter, I get to buy new power tools. This is what I'm about to buy this week.

I need lots of 1/2" wood to redo all my casings and baseboards and create new crown moldings so it's time for a decent planer.

When I raced it was VERY organized. Studded tires had their own category, as did 4x4, etc.
