Thumbs up Who 'wears the pants' in your family...

After just posting in the 'Worry' thread, I realized there might be a topic here

*Who takes care of the finances in your family?
*Routine stuff-->paying the bills, balancing the checkbook, budgeting...
*Longrange investment planning, including retirement
*Filing the income taxes....

I do almost all of this in our family Actually, I like doing it...but it is a heavy responsibilty!

How about your family? Are some tasks shared?

[QUOTE]I have come to realize that our $ security is all on my shoulders....current income, healthcare, longterm care insurance, retirement planning.

These should all be shared responsibilities. I have seen too many examples one spouse being completely in the dark because the other spouse is handling everything. It becomes a major problem if the "responsible" spouse dies or leaves. The other spouse has to learn how to handle all of these responsibilites in a hurry.

I pay the monthly bills from our household account, but +1 takes care of the investments, long range planning, etc. We discuss finances and keep a budget. We discuss any big expenditures -- our taxes our done by our accountant -- we both meet with him at tax time.

Martha takes care of all of that stuff since I can't be trusted with money or the task of keeping organized records.

We've already dealt with that potential problem at our house. Martha has informed me that I'm dying first.

Mine knows he's going first, and he knows it's not going ot be of natural causes (his AD&D coverage is WAY better than his regular life)

He takes care of his bills and I take care of mine. He's in charge of retirement (since his company matches his) and the house payment. I take care of household expenses (electric, gas, water, food, cleaning supplies, insurance for the cars and trailer....).

When I was married, I took care of bill paying and anything that required following instructions, like preparing our tax info for the accountant. Now that I'm finally divorced and we are filing separately for the first time, my ex has already asked me if I would help him file his! We always made investment decisions jointly, but, since our investments have been split, we are each doing our own decisionmaking in that area.
