My PhD is in Psychoacoustics and I have done a lot of research in the effects of noise on hearing.
I saw a show in that being used against pirates in the red sea.

Well you can include me in this group...
Guns, cars, and an infection are the big culprits in my life. The infection was just a bad situation when I was in my 20's and figured I would be fine, no need to go to the Dr. Well eventually after holding a fever for waaaaaay too long I broke down and went. After the infection was knocked down I went for hearing tests for weeks. I can't remember the number, but there was a substantial loss.
Nowadays I'm real good about hearing protection. I have several different style ear plugs, all of them are rated at the top end for that type of device. And I guess, I could also add to the above list my woodworking tools, boy, the planner is realllllllly loud.

My hearing loss is military related and then complicated by giant evil rock and roll speakers.
Any background noise at all and my hearing's impaired. My left ear is the worst. I have learned to read lips a little bit and that helps.
Higher frequency sounds are the biggest loss. I can't hear a lot of engine noises, like my supercharger whining etc.

Funny story..... for the longest time my wife thought it was just selective hearing. We were at a seminar and while we were talking to a gentleman one on one, she noticed that I was always turning my head to the right when he would speak (noisy in the room). Once we got in the car for the ride home she said " you really can't hear can you"........I've been telling you that for years.........

<---Tinnitus. Mine is a high pitched sound. I have gotten to the point where 99% of the time I am not even aware of it but any time I think about it (like when I happen to read or hear something on the subject) I can easily detect it...i.e. it never really goes away.

While I haven't been formally tested and I can hear well in general, I know it isn't the same anymore.
When I listen to certain musical passages I know what it should sound like and the upper registers aren't there anymore. Mostly background spatial stuff just isn't there.

I have noticed it a little lately, but I am hoping it's because I am sick and not really losing my hearing yet.
What worried me the other day was I was behind a vehicle and was reading his/her license plate frame and the bottom looked REALLY blurry, like the words were on top of each other/stacked. The worst part was that I had LASIC about 10 years ago and I thought it was starting to go bad again. When I got RIGHT behind the car and at a stop, I realized that there really WAS two sets of words stacked on top of each other. That was a relief.
