Where have all the cowboys gone?

Gotta admit, Silverado is one of my favorite flicks. But then again, so is Grosse Pointe Blank. And so is Das Boot. And so is Rashomon.
Sometimes you just want moral simplicity. Sometimes you want bleak comedy. Sometimes you want the "bad guys" to be the heroes. And sometimes you want to see that everything depends on perspective.
But if you only want one of those (any one of those), then you are missing the whole picture. The cowboy movies are still out there, and they still have their value. But even when John Wayne was a young man people knew the difference between morality plays and real life.

Mike Your absolutely right.
But when the time in life comes that you have to make one of those reality decisions, the really hard kind and the easy ones, or when someones making those kind of decisions that affect your life.
I'll take ethics and virtue and personal honor in my or that persons childhood anytime.
We need Cowboys

I think I understand what you mean by "I want Cowboys" - I recall back in my high school years, my English Literature teacher trying to teach a bunch of wet behind the ears kids about romantic literature. And that is what your talking about. Not the reality stuff of todays celebrity, but the stories of ordinary men rising above ordinary lives to be or become better than they are. Stories that present the positive aspects of the human nature. My favorite example of this is the movie of "The Last of the Mohicans" - a movie based on James Fenmore Coopers novel. (He was a romantic novalist of that period). Was what he wrote very accurate - no, but was it inspiring, definitely!
And yes we have "cowboys here in Pennsylvania. Every year in October, we have the "Tom Mix" Festival. He was a local boy who made it big in Hollywood back in the days of the singing cowboy. (We even have a gun fight or two!)
