Leaving tomorrow morning for four nights in Big Bear Lake, an LA area mountain resort at 7,000'.

We always take two cars. We load up the telescope, our two dogs, and our stuff in Anne Marie's Acura RDX and I drive up separately in the Vette. We tear up the mountain by day in Big Red and do serious Astronomy at night. I can't wait!

Nice scope. Is that an 11" or an 8"?

fltsfshr
8" Meade LX200. My recurring dream is to get a place in Big Bear with a clear, unbroken 360° view of the horizon and build a high deck with an observatory dome housing a 16" Meade LX200 on a permanent equatorial mount pier and retire and live there. (How's that for a run on sentence?) However, we've never spent a winter in snow country. Maybe snowbird winters in Palm Springs. Just fantasy at this point.

Question from an astronomy NOOB:

What sky objects can you track with your telescope? Obviously the moon, Jupiter , Mars, and Saturn. Are there others?

Thanks,

gary

My scope's GOTO function can automatically find, center, and track any of 64,000 objects in the night sky. With a laptop hooked up, that number becomes over 500,000 (a meaningless number). All I need to do is type an object's code on a hand held keypad. I make up a suite of objects during the day that we are going observe that night. Some of my favorites are Andromeda Galaxy, the Globular Cluster in Hercules, and the Dumbbell Nebula. Most all of the deep sky objects (outside our solar system) are not visible to the naked eye --- except Andromeda Galaxy.

You are dedicated! The +1 isn't running them that often. His next official one is Dec, but he'll probably find another one before then. He'll have close to a full one (about 21 miles) after he runs his three legs of the Bourbon Chase next week.

Bunch of yard work Saturday...trying to get my winter prep done.

I get to play on Sunday. WNY-SCCA Champagne Run. Traditional end of year autocross where the winners get the "best bottle of champagne that $3 will buy" instead of trophies.

I might or might not be working Saturday if not I'm going to clean up the s and if I have time undercoat and paint the oil pan on my Tacoma. Then Sunday I am going to the last cars n'coffee of the season. Monday I may have to work or may not but either way I'm going out in the S as it is supposed to be in the 70's.

Part of the deal of getting the ride is that we aren't allowed to take photos or post them, or any impressions we have about the ride. It seems that Road and Track hasn't had their opportunity for a ride along, yet, and we are extremely fortunate that Acura is doing this for us and being such a big part of NSXPO this year. I'll just post smilies. After about two weeks it should be okay to talk about it. Must be after the pros will have gotten their rides completed.
