rather than freezing ice and going through craploads of ice, just put a bunch of small plastic bottles of water in the freezer.
when one thaws pull it out of the Briggs and swap in another fresh from the freezer.
you put the water in the briggs around the bottles.

I froze regular 20oz (maybe 16oz) bottles of water and would put them (unopened) in the cooler then fill it with water. When the bottles would thaw I would switch them out with another set of bottles and refreeze the first set. They kept the water cold and I didn't need to keep buying ice.

I am going to mention the idea to our daughter who is helping care for our granddaughter. Up until now, our daughter has been buying ice at Costco on a regular basis. We let her borrow a very heavy duty freezer that will keep ice for 4 to 5 days.

We constantly have small and large flat ice packs in the freezer as well as frozen flat containers. Like I said, cubes are for adult beverages.

Hertz Donut

I was going to be doing overnight work this weekend but that's been pushed off, so instead I'm going to drive with my son down to our capital city ~200 miles away so he can sit his pre-med exam. He wants to be an electrical or mechanical engineer but seeing how methodical he was when one of our calves was gravely ill we think he shouldn't ignore the option of a medical career. He has health challenges himself (an as-yet undetermined periodic fever syndrome) and he's under the weather this week so I don't know how well he'll do but we can't move the date. I've booked a hotel room so we can arrive the day before, and check out late after the exam.

Hopefully being a little under the weather will work to his advantage. It can unkowningly help calm his nerves.
