Starting Sunday, prepping for my knee surgery by bathing in anti-bacterial soap twice daily, then it’s checking in to a hotel near the hospital on Monday so we won’t have to get up so early on Tuesday, the day of the surgery. From my friends who have had it done, the surgery is no big deal, but the rehab not so much!

Good luck, Gene. Ditto on ice machines. Keeping swelling down is key to comfort and healing.
My nephew is having surgery on his back tomorrow. Minimally invasive, but obviously still scary. They did a ton of research on providers after having initial care in the area of Syracuse. The surgery is being done in NYC. He's had issues for 12+ weeks. Pain diminished but nerve damage is causing difficulty walking. A neuro surgeon is doing the procedure.

I'm guessing the advice about an ice machine is simply something that can create crushed ice, which most any refrigerator can do. Since a knee can't be too easy to wrap then crushed ice in a plastic bag will do. Make some cubes for a stiff drink or two and you'll be fine.

They have specialized wraps with hoses, that attach to a machine in which you put ice, and it keeps the surgical area cool, not cold and you don't have to do the 20 minutes on/off thing. I had one for my shoulder surgeries, Rick did as well.

Our granddaughter had foot surgery on July 10, 2024.
She has an ice machine, which she called Breg Polar Care System.
I think it is probably like what Scooots posted.
She called the unit on her left leg Plasma Flow. It is used to prevent deep vein thrombosis.

That doesn't look fun for Josie, Sue. What did she do to her foot?
